Scripture: Job 8:5-7
Title: Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be
욥 8:5
네가 만일 하나님을 부지런히 구하며 전능하신 이에게 빌고
But if you will look to God and plead with the Almighty,
욥 8:6
또 청결하고 정직하면 정녕 너를돌아보시고 네 의로운 집으로 형통하게
하실 것이라
if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place.

네 시작은 미약하였으나 네 나중은 심히 창대하리라
Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.
Happy new year to everyone! May all of you be blessed! Year 2010 has gone and 2011 began.
I pray that you may have grace and be blessed for the new year in the Lord’s name. Korea has left records in various aspects for the last year. One of ten people in Korea has a Smartphone and they use it the most frequently in the world.
Korea has a small land and lacks resources. Thus, manufacture of exports is the only way that Korea can go. Korea’s degree of dependence upon foreign trade amounted to 85% for the last year. No other countries had this figure. In other words, foreign trades enabled it to run the domestic economy.
As for the technology sector, its shipbuilding has been recognized as the top of the world. And it made a splendid achievement getting the most foreign orders by the standard technology.
Korean B-boys also obtained the world’s recognition. And Korea had the highest increase of rate in income tax in the world, which means that it had the greatest economic growth in the world. Moreover, two Koreans, a man and a woman, took the first prize in Face World Match, a competition for the most looking-good person in the world, that was held by Danal, an IT company in Korea.
Anybody wants to be the top in his own field. A comedian made fun of this, saying “only the tops are recognized in the world.” The saying became popular in Korea for a while.
Anybody has a desire to be successful in life. They want to be the tops or the best ones. The desires were produced by God’s blessing. Let’s read Genesis 1:28.
창 1:28
하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시며 그들에게 이르시되 생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라, 땅을 정복하라, 바다의 고기와 공중의 새와 땅에 움직이는 모든 생물을 다스리라 하시니라

God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
God created the heaven and the earth and let human beings be fruitful and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it. And He endowed us with the desire to be successful.
We can see that God wants us to be successful in life because the word “success” is used a lot in the Bible.
Sisters and Brothers from all nations! You also came to Korea to be successful in life. I pray that you may be successful in life in the Lord’s name.

Let me talk about how God wants us to realize the mentality of success through the today’s verses and how to be successful in life in the biblical view. I pray that you sisters and brothers from all nations may have the blessing of success for the year 2011 in the Lord’s name. Amen.
1. The mentality of success
Let’s read Job 8:7 together.
욥 8:7
네 시작은 미약하였으나 네 나중은 심히 창대하리라
Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be.
Koreans seem to have a strong mindset for success and to be full of desires to be successful. It is because Koreans have been invaded by the surrounding countries many times in history, and they were classified as a weaker people, who had to pay a tribute to the foreign countries and led a difficult life.
Koreans have a sentiment of pains and persecution given through the multiple invasions of northern peoples during the 5,000 years history. The two provocations done by North Korea last year, the ROKS Cheonan sinking and the Yeonpyongdo bombardment, also were the accidents with pains we don’t want to remember.
Those invasions and accidents in our memories have made even the dynamics for success of Koreans. Sisters and brothers! You also can think of the difficult situations you have as a stepping stone for future success.
Those who have gone through poverty know how painful and tiring the poverty is. Those who have had a severe disease for a long time know how the pains undermine the life and that they have to fight against the disease. This morning, Sisters and Brothers from all nations! One of the reasons we are here in Koyngdong Church is to be blessed so that we can remove poverty, disease and ignorance.
God wants us to be successful in life while we live on earth. God hopes that we will be set free from poverty, disease and curses, and as His people we lead the best life and glorify Him.
So, I pray that we may remove the economic or health problems we have and live a better and blessed life for the year 2011 in the Lord’s name.
We can see through the today’s verses that God wants to make our wishes for success. He wants us to prosper in every aspect.
There is a Korean saying “Slow and steady wins the race.” Another blessing language is “Well begun is half done.” Sisters and Brothers! I hope that we make a leap for the year 2011 with belief that God makes us ready for the future success.
Don’t hesitate. Just start off. Put your first step into practice. Once you make a first step, God is the one who accompanies you and makes you to be successful. Be brave and challenge it again. I hope you to make a leap with new hope.
Today’s verses are blessing. “Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous your future will be.” Amen. It says that even though we begin with nothing great, our future will be prosperous.
The word ‘prosperous’ is used when a country has made a dynamic growth in economy and industry sectors as if a ship is under easy wind sail. Imagine that a ship sails before the wind. The word describes such a good situation.
And also, the word ‘prosperous’ describes a situation when your business is going well. The word is also appropriate for the expression “The weather looks prosperous for the harvest.”
Therefore, the word prosperous is not only good for the big scale work, but also is used when a right thing is put in a right place and means a balanced and beautiful status.
Hallelujah! I pray that you may prosper for the year 2011 in Jesus’ name.
2. You will look to God and plead with the Almighty
Let’s read Job 8:5 together.
욥 8:5
네가 만일 하나님을 부지런히 구하며 전능하신 이에게 빌고
But if you will look to God and plead with the Almighty,
The verse suggests the requirements to be prosperous. We see that those who are successful have common requirements to be successful.
The big companies Samsung, LG and Posco were not built in a day. They identified the requirements to be successful and made every effort behind the success. They make every effort and do the best under the given circumstances.
Those efforts give them the gift of prosperity. The writer of Job suggests that despite the hopeless and difficult situations, you don’t lose hope and you should strive believing that the beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous the future will be.
The requirements for Christians are to look to God and plead with the Almighty as written in the today’s verse. Our success only depends on God’s determination. It is said that SK has to say OK to be okay in a commercial. Nothing will happen unless God says OK.
Look! Even though everybody says no, as long as God says OK it is okay. We must rely on God. Our success is only in God’s hands. Life and death or fortune and misfortune in our lives are only in His hands.
The blessed ones depend on God’s will. There is nothing more powerful than God’s power in the world. I pray that you may live a precious and blessed life driven by God’s will in Jesus’ name.
Colonel Irwin was an American astronaut. His rocket was coming back from the moon exploration. When a rocket comes back, the capsule where the astronaut gets on drops by parachute.
The speed of capsule dropping is incredible. To reduce the speed the capsule uses parachute. If there is a defect in the parachute, it leads to a disaster. It will be as if an egg is slammed to the rock.
The “if” happened to the capsule of Colonel Irwin. When he was coming back from the moon, one of the two parachutes did not work. He made an urgent contact to NASA.
Actually nobody could give a solution to that. Anybody can help jerk out the parachute of the dropping capsule?
It is impossible. There was almost no chance to rescue the dropping capsule. Nobody can rescue. Colonel Irwin was desperate. He might have thought that he was facing his final moment in life. It was a matter of life and death. He was in a big confusion. He was in total chaos. In a moment he would die.
At that moment he got an urgent message from NASA. “Colonel Irwin! Colonel Irwin! We are praying together to rescue you. Don’t lose hope. Colonel Irwin! Let’s pray with us!” A payer gives you God’s help that makes possible things that were thought as impossible.

God knows every situation. Let’s rely on God’s help and plead with Almighty! Colonel Irwin was at his knees before God that moment.
Something amazing happened. Something incredible happened. A tornado unexpectedly was coming near and reduced the speed of the dropping capsule.
The tornado increased the resist against which the capsule was dropping and the capsule was dropping slower. Of course the parachute never worked. One of the two parachute was working, another was out of order. But the unexpected wind made the capsule slower and helped the safe landing of it. Hallelujah!
Sisters and Brothers! God wants us to look to and pray to Him and rely on Him to be required to prosper although the beginnings were humble. Look up your head, everyone. God who created the heaven and the earth helps. I pray that you may realize this in Jesus’ name.
3. Being pure and upright is like a house with sturdy foundation and fames
Let’s read Job 8:6 together.
욥 8:6
또 청결하고 정직하면 정녕 너를돌아보시고 네 의로운 집으로 형통하게
하실 것이라
if you are pure and upright, even now he will rouse himself on your behalf and restore you to your rightful place.
Amen.
Generally, we hope that we are successful by the outward appearance. We just pursue the visible things. However, the Bible says that it is more important that we are successful in reality rather than outwardly.
The invisible world is more important than the visible world. Likewise, our true success is required to have this kind of approach. Being pure and upright should be the foundation and frames for our success.
Finland has a small country with its population of 5,600,000 and the GNP of $27,000 but it was ranked as the first in the national competitiveness for the four consecutive years. There is no ticket inspector on bus or subway in Finland. They can reduce the personal expenses by trusting each other. The national agreement is required to achieve the national competitiveness.
Finns’ being pure and upright is the driving force of their national competitiveness. They agree to the policies of the government and cooperate with them. And they practice honesty. They don’t need to place a ticket inspector on subway.
Only foreigners are caught by the spot check. There is no Finn who violates it. Hallelujah! Honesty is the competitiveness. Honesty is needed for us to live by.
A man called Hamaning is living in a town in America. He is a famer and seller of the agricultural equipment. He just runs his shop 7 to 12 in the morning. In the afternoon, he farms.
When he works in the fields he can’t run the shop. While he is in fields nobody can help run the shop. He chose to use honesty.
He left the shop open for people to buy the items and pay for them on their own, which is called “Self Honesty System.”
Sisters and Brothers! He has respect for others’ honesty and their character. He established Self Honesty System. Your own honesty represents respect for others’ honesty.
When you are pure and upright and when you are honest you can have respect for others’ honesty. You can think that others are also honest. Cornelius was pure and upright. He had the upright military in his house.
If you have a honest life, honest people will be around you. When you want to live a pure life, pure people will go with you also.
Being pure and upright in Job 8:6 could be the channel through which God’s blessings can be poured out upon you.
Our God likes the honest people. Proverbs 3:32 says that “for the Lord detests a perverse man but takes the upright into his confidence.” And Psalm 11:7 says that “For the Lord is righteous he loves justice; upright men will see his face.”
Our God likes the upright people and bless them, and is responsible for them. Proverbs 2:7 says that “He holds victory in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless.”
Sisters and Brothers! We have year 2011. I pray that you and I may prosper. Look to God and plead with Almighty. Whether you can succeed or not only depends on God’s hands.
God wants us to be pure and upright. I pray that we may have honesty and pureness and prosperity so that the beginnings will be humble, so prosperous the future will be, in Jesus’ name.
